You have finally made it to the major league of sports and have been inducted to a very special class that so few achieve; You are now a PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE.

Your cares and financial issues are now finally behind you and you are on easy street.

WRONG -You are now in a much better financial position than you have been in the past, but this is now where the hard work begins.

PLAY IT COY™ has developed a team of professionals to help you through this very complex situation and help you keep more of your own money that you have worked so hard to achieve.

The tax traps are many and receiving advice early is critical.

A tax trap of which many are not aware is the requirement for multi-state filing for income taxes. As a Professional Athlete, you are required to file in every state in which you earn part of your salary. So, as an example, this would include each state in which the team plays or practices from the beginning of pre-season training through the very last playoff game.

In order to help minimize some of the impact of this, one needs to think about their particular state of residency and the impact of state tax credits for taxes paid to other states This will help avoid the double taxation at the state level.

Develop a plan…

We love our athletes. We watch them jump, bound, sprint and make incredible plays nearly everyday of the week. American sport is coveted. Many of us shutter at the idea of league lockouts that would result in a season not taking place… (Just ask NHL fans).

Kevin Durant is possibly the best young NBA shooter since the arrival of Kobe Bryant. Robert Griffin III is fast becoming the best quarterback Washington Redskins fans have ever seen. Yet as sports fans, our admiration for these athletes does not carry over into whether or not they will do well over the course of their lives.

We spend great amounts of time glorifying the talents of spectacular athletes, but spend almost no time expressing concern for their life-skills.

Will this great, Hall of Fame-bound athlete be able to pay his bills when he turns 40? Will he maintain a successful marriage? Will he incur debt that he won’t be able to pay back? Will his life after the sport be equal the contribution to society as were his athletic exploits?

Most of us hope for at least these things for the people we care about, personally. How come we don’t care about these things when it comes to our favorite athletes?

We have to start pushing athletes to think about their lives AFTER the sport so they don’t end up on M.C. Hammer Lane or Terrell Owens Drive, trying to scrape what’s left of their youth to play a young man’s game, trying to take care of a grown man’s business.

More can be done for our athletes than giving them their success right now. Let’s introduce our Durants and RGIIIs to the successful life of now and later.

Let’s introduce them to the responsibility they will soon inherit after the stadium lights have dimmed. Let’s make them responsible men now, instead of waiting for post-career circumstances to finally make a man out of them.
